Safe Driving & Commuter Facts

Safe Driving

  • Driving within posted speed limits reduces wear and tear on your tires and increases fuel efficiency.
  • Check your tire pressure often as under-inflated tires can result in reduced gas mileage.
  • Shut off your engine when waiting for friends or family to prevent excess exhaust production. It’s best to park the car and walk into a restaurant, coffee shop, or bank rather than idling in the drive-thru lane.
  • Avoid “warming up” the car in the morning. According to ASE, today’s cars are designed to warm up quickly and do not require warming up.

Commuter Facts

  • Statewide, the introduction of the Commute Trip Reduction program removes approximately 20,000 vehicles from the road each morning. This results in a reduction of 5,000 tons of air pollution each year!
  • Whatcom County CTR removes approximately 329 vehicles from the roads each day. This is equivalent to a single lane of traffic on I-5 from Bellingham to Ferndale.
  • There are 259 miles of sidewalks in Bellingham!
